It’s not a question of mysteries, of the reader purposely not being told. For then he knows that he’ll be told eventually,. It’s a question of his never being told, not being given the full story. The full story, the novel as it should ahve been written, is there in the author’s mind: If it weren’t, the reader wouldn’t be aware of something missing
